MORE ABOUT US Butch and Cherry Stoltz have, in the past, both worked for advertising agencies in Johannesburg, South Africa, and the South African Broadcasting Corporation for many years, prior to starting their own businesses. BUTCH STOLTZ PRODUCTIONS was established in 1986 and DREAMFACTORY in 1995.
Butch left South Africa at the age of 18 to train as an animator for 3 years in London, with GUILD TELEVISION SERVICES. He went on to produce TV ads for ROBERTSON'S MARMALADE, MR. THERM and REMINGTON RAZORS. On returning to his home country, In 1975, Butch established an Animation Dept. for the SOUTH AFRICAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION (SABC - TV) and designed their opening logo when national television broadcasting officially began later that year. Butch received a coveted ARTES AWARD in 1976, in the category BEST CONTRIBUTION TO SCENIC SERVICES, for well-known South African TV programmes such as: HAAS DAS, WIELIE WALIE, UIT EN TUIS and KOFFIEHUIS KONSERT. He left the SABC in 1986 to start his own company, continuing to freelance for SABC TV. Butch also made a number of animated ads - SIMBA CHIPS, MUM FOR MEN, NESQUICK, MAZDA 323, HARPIC and CITRUSEAL - for various agencies. He also produced weekly comic strips for KEUR magazine (TROEPIE) and the RADIO & TV guide (KAREL KRAAI and SAREL SEEMONSTER). After moving down to KwaZulu Natal, Butch animated a 20 min, featurette - THE ULTIMATE CHOICE - on HIV/AIDS for the WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION in 2000. Butch's recent clients include: MACMILLAN PUBLISHERS (Johannesburg), STRUIK PUBLISHING (Cape Town), SHUTER & SHOOTER PUBLISHERS (Pietermaritzburg), WALTSAN PUBLISHING (Texas, USA), ACAT (AFRICAN CO-OPERATIVE ACTION TRUST - South Africa) and NUTREND PUBLISHERS (Pietermaritzburg). To date, the latter are the first, and largest, black-owned publishing company in South Africa .
Cherry began her chequered career as a window dresser and display artist for various national department stores in Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg - GARLICKS, EDGARS and SHOE CORPORATION. She worked her way up to Window & Interior Designer for GREATERMANS in Rosebank. In 1976, Cherry met Butch and joined him at the SABC TV in the following year. She started as an animation artist and, after they married in 1981, transferred to the Graphics Department, specializing in producing action props, in-house, for TV productions, as well as for outside film companies on a freelance basis. In 1992, the SABC approached Cherry to join a new section - Special Projects - as a Project Planner and Designer. In that same year, she received an OUTSTANDING ACHIEVER AWARD for various projects. Her duties included merchandise design, advertising, model-building, architectural drawing, obtaining finance for projects and putting together audio-visual presentations. In 1994, Cherry and her manager, Rod Campbell, managed the construction (interiors) of a multi-million rand museum for SOUTH AFRICAN BREWERIES - the SAB VISITOR'S CENTRE in Newtown, Johannesburg. She and Butch re-located to KwaZulu Natal in 1995, where they live and work in the beautiful village of Hilton. Cherry began writing commercially shortly afterwards and one thing led to another. She has written short articles on interior decorating, DIY and South African history for local newspapers as well as a regular, weekly column in the SA HOME HANDYMAN magazine. Cherry has also written and illustrated a number of adult education modules for ACAT - covering diverse subjects such as sewing, egg production, small business structures and herb growing. She has edited and illustrated a number of books for publishing houses and independant authors - including two separate autobiographies written by a Member of Parliament and one of Nelson Mandela's personal guards. UNION BIBLE INSTITUTE (Hilton) uses her services as an editor, illustrator and publisher, when needed. In addition, Cherry has written and illustrated books of her own including: FOOTPRINTS OVER QUATHLAMBA and HOUDINI AND OTHER TAILS FROM PINE ACRES FARM. Cherry's recent clients include: STRUIK PUBLISHING (Cape Town), SHUTER & SHOOTER PUBLISHERS (Pietermaritzburg), WALTSAN PUBLISHING (Texas, USA), ACAT (South Africa), THE UNIVERSITY OF LESOTHO (Lesotho) and NUTREND PUBLISHERS (Pietermaritzburg).
